What to do on a gray spring day in Anchorage?
Go looking for hints of green -- these are Bergenia leaves.
Nearby is a tiny bit of thyme in a pot, mostly hidden under last fall's leaves.
Tulips (?) around the base of a tree.
We walked about 3/4 of a mile to the Fred Meyer store, looking to see what was going on in the neighborhood. A neighbor's chickens were enjoying their front yard.
Another resident is filling in the spaces in the chicken wire fence with wine bottles. He has a ways to go.
St. Francis, well-weathered, by a birch tree.
This yard has a pleasing collection of objects, from the white flamingo back at the corner of the house, to the squirrel with a mushroom in front of the welcome sign.
Today is St. Markdown Day, according to Anthea -- when all of the holiday chocolate goes on sale. We should have at least taken a picture, but we recalled that our chocolate drawer is full and resisted the temptation to buy more.
We did take pictures of the flowers on racks outside the store -- another sign of spring. This is Hellebore.
The violas (Johnny-jump-ups) are a favorite; ditto . . .
their cousins the pansies.
Last, the lilies.
